Of All the Things Not to FORGET on the Fishing Trip

Saturday, June 21st, 2008 8:35am

Most would agree a stop at the tackle shop shouldn’t be forgotten but recently I was told the story of a well planned and long anticipated fishing vacation. This spot was one of those that you hear whispered about and never see let alone get to fish on. A high mountain lake, secluded, trout as long as your arm and will strike a hook without bait or lure. A very rough road and 5 long hours from the sign that said “last services”. A week of camping, fishing and extreme R&R is the only thing in mind. As the great trout slayer rounded the bend and saw the pristine water for the first time, an eerie feeling came all over him. Gas… he forgot gas. No hose that would act as a siphon. Another 10 hours travel time to be subtracted from the vacation before he could launch the boat.

We have all had that eerie feeling as we recalled our own “forgot the gas” caper. Our suggestion as old fashion as it seems: Make a camping/fishing list and save it. You can use it every time you leave to go fishing, camping, vacation or just a trip.

We have holidays coming up that sprinkle through the summer. Here is a tip we would like to share:

Each holiday we come home from the lake or mountains, streams and favorite fishing haunts to see in the news hundreds of accidents that have happened involving water sports. Take a moment before you leave home to whisper a fishermans prayer: “Help me to leave the fishing space a better place for my grandchildren to experience tomorrow, and for my fellow angler, I pray for their safety.” These few moments to include SAFETY on your trip may make the difference in you or your party showing up in the news back home.

Include in your list:

    • A first aid kit, (if the kit doesn’t have, Tea Tree Oil Buy some and add it to the kit).
    • Charged cell phone batteries, (adapter charge cord for the car or truck)
    • Enough life preservers,
    • Space blankets, (Walmart, very small and inexpensive)
    • Flash lights,
    • A whistle for the boat,
    • You may have a fire extinguisher in the boat, but you should have one also in the vehicle towing the boat,
    • Distilled water, (can be used for drinking)
    • Sunscreen, (Banana Boat AloeVera Gel with Solercain if you didn’t use the sunscreen)
    • Insect Repellant

Oh yeah, Don’t forget…BE SAFE and you will remember to have fun!

Deep sixd anchor

Saturday, June 21st, 2008 8:35am

Spare anchor? It takes a special sense of humor to appreciate tossing untied anchors overboard, but once you get it, it isn’t so bad. I went fishing with my 20+ year old son one day for pink salmon on a river 85 miles distant from home,i.e. we went through a great deal of bother to get there and get launched. The tide was going out, and there were two choices; drift or anchor. We choose to anchor. I had cleaned the boat - everything was neat, tidy and in place just the way I like it. The fifty foot anchor rope was untied and coiled; seamanlike and marlinspike. I was putzing with the rigging on my pole, when I heard a splash and glanced over at my son.

He was watching the anchor rope uncoil at a very fast pace - and when he saw the tip of the line zip over the side of the boat he had one of the funniest expressions Ive ever seen on anyones face. Spare anchor?

Nah…don’t believe in them. Spare rope? Nah…why would you need a spare rope without an anchor to tie it to. Long story short, we spent 30 minutes drifting…which is a poor word to describe the rapidity we would experience ripping along with the tide, through lines of anchored boats, down the river. But theres an upside to the story. When you don’t catch any fish, you don’t clean any fish - and the boat stays nice & clean.

Techniques for Wahoo

Saturday, June 21st, 2008 8:35am

Techniques for Wahoo Increase your wahoo catches 100%!

I am lucky to live and fish professionally in Turks and Caicos islands where the wahoos are abundant and huge. Almost all the people that I talk too (and have fished with here in TCI)who fish within the continental U.S. always express an interest in catching more or some wahoo. The below paragraph explains a fishing technique that has worked 100% of the time (when followed) from Louisiana to Florida to New Jersey.

Here in Turks and Caicos 10,000 feet of water is less than two miles from the beach but for the most of you, you have a much longer run. You could be catching fish while speeding to the fishing grounds by setting two or more lures and trolling at speeds up to twenty knots. When you reach 100 feet of water or more stop and put out the spread described below. Set your cruising speed below 20 knots and get ready to catch some wahoo.

First, I have seen messages that discuss problems with setting enough drag on lighter tackle to stop line from feeding off the reel. We personally use Shimano Tiagra 80s and 50s but I understand that others wish to use lighter tackle. To be able to troll at these speeds with lighter tackle (30s and 50s) the solutions are easy.
